Mold Removal DIY: Safe and Effective Home Remedies

by onsitepro.org

  • Always identify and fix the moisture source before attempting any home remedies to remove mold
  • DIY solutions like vinegar, baking soda, and tea tree oil work well for small mold problems. There are also some highly effective commercial cleaners.
  • Call a professional for large infestations, black mold, or recurring issues.

The first sign of a mold problem is the unmistakable musty, stale smell, like wet clothing left out for too long. Some types give off a tangy, fermenting odor, similar to yeast or brewing beer.

Then comes the discoloration or dark spots on your walls or ceilings. Sometimes the mold isn’t visible at all because it’s spreading behind your walls or under your floors

If you leave mold unchecked, it deteriorates your air quality and can even damage your home’s structure. Black mold, in particular, can trigger respiratory problems and other health issues.

We’ve tested many DIY mold removal methods over the years and found that some work better than others. Here’s what we’ve seen work best, and what to watch out for when you tackle mold yourself.

1. Identify the Source

First and foremost, before you grab a scrub brush or bleach, you need to find out where the moisture is coming from. This is probably the most important mold removal tip because it will keep coming back if you don’t fix the source, no matter how hard you clean!

Mold thrives in damp, poorly ventilated areas like leaky pipes, damaged roofs, or humid bathrooms and basements. Humidity buildup is especially common in homes near the Los Angeles coast.

According to EPA guidelines, if the moldy area is smaller than 10 square feet (about a 3 ft. by 3 ft. patch), mold removal DIY methods are generally safe. If it’s any larger, or if you’re unsure where the moisture is coming from, call in professional mold remediation. We’ve seen people struggle with persistent infestations because their home remedies to remove mold weren’t thorough enough.

2. Protect Yourself and Prepare the Area

Mold spreads through tiny spores that you can’t see, which easily become airborne. These spores irritate your lungs, skin, and eyes. So, always take a moment to prepare yourself and the area before you start any mold removal DIY project.

Protect yourself with non-porous gloves, a properly fitted mask (N95 or better), and goggles or other eye protection.

Next, open windows and doors to keep air circulating and reduce your exposure to airborne spores, and cover HVAC vents with plastic sheeting or old towels.

3. Use Home Remedies to Remove Mold

Once you’ve followed the mold removal tips above, it’s time to get to work. There are several effective mold removal DIY solutions you can use, many with natural cleaning products you probably already have in your cabinet:

  • White vinegar: Spray undiluted vinegar directly on the affected area and let it sit for at least an hour. Then, scrub with a stiff brush and rinse with water. Full-strength vinegar works best, but if the surface is sensitive, like leather, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and spray generously.
  • Baking soda: This option is great for killing the mold, scrubbing, and getting rid of the odor. Sprinkle baking soda on the moldy area or mix one tablespoon with 17 oz (500ml) of water and spray it on. You can also combine baking soda with vinegar for an extra powerful mold removal DIY solution.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide (3%): This kills mold and disinfects the area. Spray it onto the moldy surface, let it bubble for 10 to 15 minutes, then wipe clean with a damp cloth.
  • Tea tree oil: This is an extremely effective fungicide. In fact, a 2015 study found it even more effective at killing mold than vinegar. Mix one tablespoon of tea tree oil with one cup of water in a spray bottle. Spray it on the area and don’t wash it off.

Remember to always let your DIY mold removal solution sit. Also, do not scrub excessively, as it could spread spores even more.

4. Use Commercial Mold Removers

Sometimes, home remedies to remove mold are not enough. At this point, look for EPA-registered products for mold and mildew

Some examples include:

  • Concrobium Mold Control: A versatile product that eliminates mold and prevents it from coming back. It also works well on a variety of surfaces and materials.
  • RMR-86 products: This brand offers a variety of mold and mildew removers, including the RMR-141 Disinfectant and the RMR-86 Instant Mold and Mildew Stain Remover.
  • Mold Armor: A line of mold removers that includes sprays, foggers, and protectants.

Always read the label carefully before using any product, test on a small area, and follow all safety instructions.

However, if you’re still struggling after using commercial products, or the mold keeps coming back, it’s time to stop Googling “mold removal DIY” and call in a mold removal service

5. Hire a Professional

You cannot, or should not, handle all mold problems with DIY solutions. Large infestations, toxic types like black mold, or mold spreading through your HVAC system should be treated by a certified and experienced mold remediation expert.

These situations require specialized equipment and containment strategies, plus thorough inspections to ensure your space is fully safe. Attempting to remove widespread infestations with DIY mold removal strategies can worsen the problem and expose you to danger.
